Decatur County Superior Court Overview

Note: A jail roster charge is not a final Superior Court disposition, and the sheriff warns that charges are not final until reviewed by prosecutors or courts.

Decatur County Judges Officers

The South Georgia Judicial Circuit identifies three circuit judges: Chief Judge Heather H. Lanier, Presiding Judge M. Claire Chason, and Presiding Judge Lawton C. Heard, Jr. The circuit Decatur County page lists Judge Heard's office at the Decatur County Courthouse. Judge Lanier's office is in Camilla, and Judge Chason's office is in Cairo. Circuit calendars and itineraries may place judges in different counties during the year, so the calendar is the safer source for a hearing date or assignment.

Other Decatur County court officers shape the records path. Clerk Cecilia Willis is the Clerk of Superior Court. Sheriff Wiley Griffin is listed for the Decatur County Jail and Sheriff's Department. Probate Judge Eric L. Gay and Clerk Yvonne Jenkins handle probate matters. Chief Magistrate Ann Marie Emmons, with Deputy Magistrates Teresa McMillam and Christine Chaney, handles Magistrate Court functions at the Spring Creek Road address. State Court is presided over by Judge David Kendrick.

Decatur County DA Defender

The District Attorney for the South Georgia Judicial Circuit is Joe Mulholland, also listed as Joseph Mulholland. The DA office serves Baker, Calhoun, Decatur, Grady, and Mitchell Counties. The Superior Court page says DA Mulholland is responsible for prosecuting felony matters in Superior Court. The Public Defender office is the defense-side public office for eligible defendants. The research found Chief Public Defender Hoyle "Tre" McLendon, phone 229-246-2877, with Assistant Public Defenders Patrick Chisholm and Erica Austin and investigators Jeremy Crosby and Michael Logue. The clerk Superior Court page lists the public defender office at 717 East Shotwell Street, while the circuit officers page lists 118 River Street. Because those addresses differ, call the office before visiting.

Decatur County Civil Hearing Rule

The South Georgia Judicial Circuit publishes itineraries, monthly hearing calendars, civil calendar notices, civil pretrial notices, and trial calendars. That makes the circuit calendar a key source for Decatur County Superior Court hearings and docket planning. The circuit homepage also announces a specific operational change for civil hearings: beginning September 1, 2025, the court will no longer have a designated court reporter for the circuit's monthly civil hearing dates.

If either party wants a monthly civil hearing matter reported, that party is responsible for procuring a court reporter. This does not decide who wins a case, but it can affect whether a transcript exists for later motion practice or appeal. Parties should confirm hearing type, calendar status, and reporter needs before the hearing date. The clerk can provide records access, but it cannot give legal strategy about whether a transcript is needed.

Decatur County Appeals Path

Georgia trial-court appeals depend on the case type. Superior Court orders may route to the Court of Appeals of Georgia or to the Supreme Court of Georgia for matters within Supreme Court jurisdiction. Decatur County Federal Court Distinction

Federal court records can mention Decatur County, Bainbridge, local property, or local residents, but they are not county Superior Court records. The U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Georgia handles federal civil cases, federal criminal prosecutions, civil-rights suits, federal-question litigation, diversity cases, and other federal matters. Its CM/ECF system is the federal filing platform, and PACER is the federal public-access route.

Bankruptcy cases are handled by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Georgia. A bankruptcy file may affect a Decatur County civil case or real estate issue, but it is filed and searched in federal bankruptcy court. When the record is a county divorce, felony, land-title action, equity case, name change, adoption, or custody file, the Decatur County Superior Court route remains the local clerk's office.
